BBC’s 100 Women of 2015 series has chosen a Syrian refugee from Raqqa. As misinformed mainstream media continues to insist on describing IS behavior as “traditional” behaviors of Muslims in the Qur’an and westernized communities of Muslims as having been liberated from barbaric traditions in the Qur’an, it is necessary to hear from refugees about life before and after IS occupation. Moreover, Raqqa is significant to early Islamic civilization because the Abbasid empire’s capital for over a decade and it was destroyed by the Mongols in 1260 CE.[1]
